Dialler

Definition
A dialler calls numbers from a campaign list automatically. A predictive dialler calls more numbers than there are free agents, based on the expected answer rate.
Dialling by hand takes time: type the number, wait, voicemail, next attempt. A dialler takes that work over and connects agents only with people who actually pick up. How much it takes over depends on the dialling mode.
#The modes at a glance
| Mode | How it dials | Suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Preview | Agents see the record and start the call | Advice, sensitive conversations |
| Progressive | One number per agent who becomes free | Reminders, appointment setting |
| Predictive | Several numbers at once, by expected answer rate | Large lists, short calls |
| Agentless | Announcement or voice dialogue without a person | Notifications |
#The risk of predictive mode
A predictive dialler works with probabilities: because only some people answer, it dials more numbers than there are free agents. When the calculation fails, someone picks up and nobody is there.
The result is a silent or abandoned call. It annoys people and looks untrustworthy. A responsible campaign therefore caps the abandon rate, uses progressive mode for small teams and at least plays an announcement when no agent is free.

#Consent before technology
The dialling mode does not change the law. In Germany, marketing calls to consumers require prior express consent under section 7 of the Act against Unfair Competition (UWG).
Because campaigns often run for days, checking the list once at import is not enough. A withdrawal received yesterday has to stop today's call.
#Not just for sales
Diallers are not only a sales tool. In service they confirm appointments, announce technician visits or call back after an outage. In collections they make respectful reminders and conversations about payment plans possible.
